Catastrophic injuries aren't end of the line

There was a time when a serious injury meant euthanasia for a pet because quality of life would be diminished so severely that the pet wouldn't be able to live their lives fully.

With advances in medical technology and demonstrated adaptability of pets to recover and lead full lives, euthanasia is becoming much less of an choice. This article gives several examples of pets who have come back from devastating injuries.

“We have a number of patients who’ve had a leg amputated,” says Susan Little, a veterinarian in Toronto, Canada, and president of the Winn Feline Foundation. “They’re so good on their three legs that I have to remind myself that they only have three legs because they’re just so competent. It’s quite amazing what they can cope with.”
