Lessons from Katrina

New Hampshire pet advocates are taking the lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina and establishing a state-wide program that eliminates the need for families to abandon pets during a disaster because they don't know what to do with them.

This grassroots effort knits together all the established animal-rescue resources scattered throughout the state into a coordinated system that will take care of pets as well as livestock if a disaster should occur.

New Hampshire follows Florida and North Carolina in putting together post-disaster care.

"A main thing we make sure to emphasize is that we're not about putting animals before people; rather, it's a matter of taking care of people with pets," says Joanne Bourbeau, New England regional director for the Humane Society of the United States.
