Stopping excessive shedding

Tue, 09/09/2008 - 06:28
Q: My daughter has a female yellow Lab, 5 years old. She sheds excessively and constantly, which I find amazing, given how short her hair is. My daughter has her hands full with a 2-year-old and another baby on the way. It's a never-ending battle for her to try to keep the house hair-free.

A: My advice flies in the face of convention because there are no scientific studies to back my assertions, but there's plenty of anecdotal evidence. Few dogs fail to benefit from an upgrade in diet to a human-grade pet food sold in pet and human health-food stores (not grocery stores).

A few of the brands are Natura, Fromm, By Nature, California Natural, Evo, Bravo, Innova, FarMore and Primal. They cost more, but you'll be heading off trouble. You could also supplement your Lab's diet with a fatty-acid formula from the vet's office. Meanwhile, be sure to take her to the vet for a systems check, because voluminous shedding can also be a symptom of other problems.
