My dog is big and strong..

My dog is big and strong..

(I was not sure where to post this, I did not see a general dog discussion forum)

I have had my canine since he was born.  He is a breed many people do not like, his mother is Rednose Pitbull and his father is a hard headed Rhodesian Ridgeback.  So, my dog looks like a BIG Pitbull. The first time my puppy dragged me across the park to play with another dog, I knew I needed to let my dog know I was the alpha female and I began taking precautions, being prepared and teaching manners.

Cerberus is all grown up, has been for years.  He weighs between 100 and 110 lbs. I weigh about 120-130 lbs.   When he wants to go after something while on a leash, I have a few choices, be dragged on my stomach at the end of the leash, let go of the leash.  Neither of those were good options for me.

Anyway, here are some things I have done:

When somebody is walking toward us, my dog will sit and we stop walking while the person passes.  When I see another dog (hopefully leashed) comming our direction, again, we stop and he sits.  He is much easier to control from a sitting position rather then from a moving one. And he knows STAY better then stop or even no sometimes.
I have a big clip on the end of the leash in my hand, in the event I need to clip him to something quickly if he is not hearing me.  (I always remember that 80% rule, even the best behaved well trained dogs only listen 80% of the time)
When the leash gets tight, he stops and sits. I taught him how to do this so he wouldn't pull me all over the place.  He learned that a tight leash meant he was not going anywhere, as soon as the leash got tight I would stop and make him sit.
The "Haltie", gentle lead works 110 % to prevent pulling. But when using them, I double leash my dog with a harness as well, as he can and has gotten out of them and even broke one. Even though they have the safety chain to the collar, it is more difficult to have control over the dog and the safety chain is not very big.

Okay, those are a few of the things I have done to make dog walking more pleasant for me, my dogs and others who are out and about.

What are some of the things other big dog owners do?
