My dog has a cut on her tail, any suggestions..

My dog has a cut on her tail, any suggestions..

She has had this cut for several weeks.  I have taken her to the vet, he gave her antibiotics and suggested some sort of wrap for it.

Do you know how difficult it is to keep a wrap on a dogs tail?

She gets very excited when company comes over and in wagging her tail she pops it open and it begins to bleed.  That in itself is bad enough, but she gets blood everywhere.  I mean everywhere.  My floors look like a war zone.  (thank god I have tile floors in my house)  There is blood splats on the walls, she gets it on peoples clothes, flings it up on the TV, all over the front door, it is just everywhere.

I put one of those cones around her neck, she has such a big neck it is difficult for her to move and she does not move unless I walk with her and guide the cone.  She bumps into walls and door ways.

She does not lick the tail, except for right after she wacks it and pops it open again.  I was cleaning it with some peroxide and putting some dog antibiotic oitment it, then covering it, I would put sports wrap on it as it is kind of sticky and It stays in place without being real tight.

Then I noticed it was cracking and I thought the peroxide was drying it out or the oitment was making it too soft, allowing it to pop back open too easily.  So, I have stopped doing that.

I finally put some superglue on it, after reading about it on the internet.  It helped keep the blood from splatting all over and I thought it was helping it heal.  But now that it has been several days, I don't think it is really healing, it kind of reminds me of what a piercing in the ear does, how it heals around the edges and makes a hole in the middle,

Any suggestions or thoughts would be very much appreciated.  I really don't want to get her tail amputated.

Pipe insulation, better than duct tape!
Just found this article on a very creative way to help protect your dog's tail so it can heal - use soft pipe insulation! It will hug the tail and hopefully stay on so the tail can repair. I agree, amputation is not the answer!
OH, that is such a great

OH, that is such a great idea.  Thank you, thank you thank you.

I was even doing research on a mild sedation to keep her from getting excited till it healed.  That is such a perfect idea.  I will let you know how it worked out.
