
Prof Lee Sweeney, from the University of Pennsylvania, is getting ready to market a gene therapy treatment that would enable older dogs to enhance their strength and mobility. Not yet approved for human use, Prof Sweeney is optimistic with the treatment, which was first tested by making "mighty mice" in early research 10 years ago.
As for dogs, he sees a lot of positive benefits. "As the dogs get weak their owners get upset that they can't walk around any more. So we're hoping that within the next year we will begin the era of genetic enhancement in dogs."
American athletes would love to use the treatment to enhance their ability to compete, but the Professor believes the treatment could be most beneficial in helping treat people dealing with serious genetic diseases such as muscular dystrophy.
