
In an effort to address "drastic problems that require drastic and immediate action," in the California state budget, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is putting forth a proposal to tax veterinary and other pet services to help reduce the state's $11.2 billion budget shortfall.
Currently, most states (33) tax veterinary medications, but only three states currently tax veterinary services. There are only 8 states that charge no tax at all on animal products or services, making the tax on items like this a growing trend.
“We strongly believe that pets are members of the family,” said Valerie Fenstermaker, California Veterinary Medical Association executive director. “Any tax on veterinary services may prevent people getting good medical care for their pets. We believe that veterinary care, along with human care, should not be taxed.”
