
With another significant drop in the stock market today, two articles in different parts of the country this evening are chronicling the huge number of pets being surrendered because of these dire economic times.
In Maryland, shelters are seeing double-digit increases in animals surrendered, and many are arriving sick because their former owners weren't able to provide veterinary care for them. Bringing them to the shelter was their final effort to get help for a once member of the family.
Across the country in Wyoming, former pets are being surrendered in record numbers, with pets left in a shelter's parking lot or driveway.
“Coming to work each day is beginning to scare our employees,” said Northwoods Humane Society Executive Director Brenda Zelinka, who issued a press release and plea for help last week. “We never know what we will find.”
