UK introduces biggest loser contest for pets

Mon, 11/17/2008 - 16:16

The UK is taking a page from the hit show "The Biggest Loser" where severely overweight people compete to lose the most weight. Eight very overweight pets (including Tinks, pictured here) have been chosen by the veterinary charity PDSA and will compete by slimming down and getting back to healthier weights. The winner will be the pet who loses the biggest percentage of weight and stays true to their new diet. The grand prize will be a pet-friendly holiday for the pet and its owner.

"Alongside their daily portions of pet food, owners often show their affection by giving unhealthy human treats such as cheese, buttered toast and biscuits. They don't realize they are actually killing their pets with kindness," said Sean Wensley, a veterinary surgeon at PDSA.
